About the Book

When She Reigns (Fallen Isles #3)

By Jodi Meadows

The First Dragon

The Great Abandonment has begun. Panic has seized the Fallen Isles, where no one knows which god will rise next. Mira Minkoba believes her dreams hold the secret to bringing an end to the destruction, but in order to save her people, she’ll have to find a legendary treasure: the bones of the first dragon.

The Last Hope

Mira’s desperate search leads the Hopebearer and her friends on a dangerous journey into the heart of enemy territory: the Algotti Empire itself. The empress is more than willing to help—for an impossible price. And as tensions escalate beneath the shadows of the risen gods, Mira grapples with a terrifying question: What will she have to sacrifice to preserve what she loves?

The explosive finale to Jodi Meadows’s Fallen Isles trilogy is ablaze with sizzling romance and fiery magic as Mira’s fight to save dragons from extinction evolves into a mission to save her world from annihilation.

Author Guest Post – Revisiting Themes

It didn’t actually take me all that long to realize I was writing about the same themes over and over again, poking at issues that interest me in new ways with every book. I’ve known about my fascination with identity and masks for a while. But only recently did I see another thing that appears in my books, over and over again. Only recently was I able to put a name to it: inherited struggles.

All of my characters, in some way, have inherited problems from their parents or grandparents, or ancestors even farther back. Along the way, someone took a shortcut, or decided to put off a problem for the time being, and now, as the characters in my books come of age, they are left to deal with the most dire consequences of their ancestors’ inaction.

(Spoiler alert: it’s a metaphor for climate change.)
In the FALLEN ISLES Trilogy, the myths about the Great Abandonment are real. As long as there are dragons, the Fallen Gods will remain. But as dragons start to disappear from the islands, and those in power do little to affect positive change, the threat of the Great Abandonment looms ever nearer. The gods–the very islands–threaten to rip themselves out of the sea and leave. Who is left to take care of it? Mira and her friends. Teenage leaders, activists, and loyal friends with enormous hearts.
You can see that playing out in my series before this, too: the toxic byproduct of magic, called wraith, in THE ORPHAN QUEEN; and the terrible cost of perpetual reincarnation in INCARNATE.
I think about this a lot, because right now, our own world is facing a crisis. We may not be losing dragons, but more and more species are becoming extinct. We may not be covered in wraith, but pollution smothers cities and warms the earth. We’re feeling the effects of climate change now.
We’re not living in a book, and we can’t expect a handful of overachieving teenagers to fix everything. It’s up to adults to do something, to avoid passing on this problem, the same way our forebears passed it on to us. But books can inspire us to get there, to be the hero, even in small ways.
I expect I’ll write more books with this theme. Clearly I’m not finished thinking about it yet.
If you’re a reader, do you find yourself drawn to certain themes like this? And if you’re a writer, do you revisit themes over the course of many stories?
