2017 Debut Authors to Watch: Lana Popović

There are so many INCREDIBLE debut novels coming out this year, my TBR pile is absolutely quivering in anticipation! I want to help spread the word about some of these amazing new books and authors, so I’ll be doing a feature each Friday for a debut author you need to keep on your bookish radar!

I am so, SO excited for Wicked Like a Wildfire to come out. It is already on my GoodReads reading list for August. The cover is EXQUISITE, the story sounds vivid and captivating, and the author is not only interesting (I mean who does AERIAL YOGA?!), but she’s also great to interact with her fans online.

About Lana Popović

1464704671690.pngLana’s debut YA contemporary fantasy, Wicked Like a Wildfire, is forthcoming from Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins in Summer 2017. Lana studied psychology and literature at Yale University, and law at Boston University. She is a graduate of the Emerson College Publishing and Writing program and works as a literary agent with Chalberg & Sussman, specializing in YA.

Lana lives in Boston, subsisting largely on cake, eyeliner, and aerial yoga. She’d happily spend all her waking hours hanging out in silks, and may very well be upside down right now. Just ask her about it (depending on your tolerance for high enthusiasm and hand-waving). Lana is represented by Taylor Haggerty at Waxman-Leavell.

You can find her online on  GoodReads, Twitter, Instagram, and http://www.lanapopovicbooks.com!

Wicked Like a Wildfire

32051720.jpgAll the women in Iris and Malina’s family are born with a gleam—a unique way of manipulating beauty through magic. Seventeen-year-old Iris sees flowers as fractals and turns her kaleidoscope visions into glasswork, her twin sister Malina interprets moods as music, and their cold, distant mother Jasmina bakes scenery into decadent treats at her confectionery in Old Town Cattaro, Montenegro.

Jasmina forbids Iris and Malina to share their gleams with anyone, and above all, she forbids them to fall in love—being discovered could shatter the quiet lives they’ve built in their tucked-away, seaside town. But Iris and Malina are tired of abiding by their mother’s rules and rebel in secret whenever they can.

Yet when a mysterious, white-haired woman attacks their mother and leaves her hovering between life and death, the sisters unearth an ancient curse that haunts their line—a wicked bargain that masquerades as a blessing, and binds the twins’ fates—and hearts—to a force larger than life. To save each other, they must untangle a thousand years of lies and reveal their own hurtful secrets. But even the deepest sacrifice might not be enough.

Wicked Like a Wildfire is the first book in a sumptuous, bewitching duology about the power of love, death, magic, and the many faces of beauty.

Out August 15th, 2017!!!!

This is on my TBR list too!!! Reading your post makes me even more excited for it. Other debut novels on my TBR list include Caraval and Empress of a Thousand Skies!
Also love the cover of Wicked like a Wildfire <3

I actually read Caraval already, and it’s INCREDIBLE. It’s seriously my new favorite book. Empress of a Thousand Skies is definitely on my list too!

Have you read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern? They both feature a magical circus & a game; I want to get a feel for how similar the two are. Could you speak to this? Cheers 🙂

      • YAandWine says:

Yes, and I adore it! They are definitely comparable, but also a lot different in tone and actual story. The Night Circus felt a bit more whimsical and was a solid standalone, and Caraval, while equally STUNNING in the visual department, felt more plot driven, and I’m so THRILLED that it’s a series. They both have incredible descriptions of their worlds, but they’re done in very different ways.

I feel like this book isn’t being talked about enough! It sounds very good, kind of like Chocolat and The Secret of a Heart Note. I’m curious to see how this family curse plays out.

I’m looking forward to reading Caraval, which I just got in the mail today! I read the sampler and fell in love with it. I wish I were a little richer and could buy all the UK copies for their unique covers!

I agree! It doesn’t come out until August, so hopefully the buzz will slowly start building!

Seriously, those U.K. Caraval covers are insane! I so wish I could collect them all!
